Batavia's Graveyard (M): National. D: Paul Verhoeven. This is a true story of an astonishing 17th century shipwreck and mutiny off the coast of Western Australia. The Batavia, the flagship of the Dutch East India Company, ran aground on an island atoll and while the captain sailed off for help - the rest of the crew ended up falling into a miniature Fascist regime which split and lead to a battle between two rival camps - a real life 'Lord of the Flies' but with adults.

Thornton plays a small-town Louisiana sheriff who, against his wishes, must investigate the murder of a transsexual, a crime that may be tied to some of the state's most powerful political players. Patricia Arquette plays a New Orleans prostitute who helps him with the case.

Roadshow. Executive producer: Roy Disney The nature film genre was very important to Walt Disney and, in 1948, he created a film series called “True-Life Adventures”.  The first film in the series, “Seal Island”, provide immensely popular with audiences and went on to win an Academy Award.  Over the next twelve years, there would be another twelve “True-Life Adventures”, which collected a total of eight Academy Awards.  “Birds of Prey” continues this rich Company legacy as it will be the first in a series of films which collectively will be called “Disney’s Animal Kingdom”.  It promises to be a wild documentary focusing on falcons, eagles and hawks, as seen in their natural habitat.

 

Blue Car (MA): Selected. Buena Vista. 96 mins. Drama. David Strathairn, Agnes Bruckner, Frances Fisher, Regan Arnold, Sarah Bueler, A.J Buckley. D: Karen Moncrief. An 18 year old Ohio girl, Meg (Bruckner), abandoned by her father (who left in the title vehicle; which also becomes the title of one of her poems) and neglected by her overworked mother (Colin), who turns for solace and inspiration to her English teacher (Strathairn), in what turns from a mentoring into a stronger relationship and friendship, as she participates in a poetry competition in Tampa.
