MOVIES RELEASED
AUGUST 2001 AUSTRALIA
2 AUGUST
The Animal (M): National. Columbia. Comedy. Rob Schneider, Guy Torry, Colleen Haskell. Schneider following up his Male Gigolo effort with undoubtedly more bad taste humour, throw in a can't-find-work-anywhere-else Michael Caton and bikini clad original survivor Colleen.
Down To Earth (PG): National. Roadshow. Comedy. Chris Rock, Regina King, Chazz Palminteri, Eugene Levy. Re-make of a re-make, this is about a black guy who mistakenly is taken to heaven early, so they have to give him a white guys body... As stupid as it sounds its probably a lot worse to actually sit through. Rock, you deserve better!
The Ladies Man (M): Selected. UIP. Comedy. Tim Meadows, Karyn Parsons, Billy Dee Williams, John Witherspoon. DJ gets canned for being a bit rude on air, and finds the easy sex drying up. So when an ex comes around and offers to share her riches, he's in. Based on a Saturday Night Live character, this 'Mother Teresa of boning' is certainly worth a look-see if you want a negative IQ level evening.
A Time For Drunken Horses (M): Selected. Ayoub Ahmandi, Rojin Younessi. Iranian flick about Kurds trying to smuggle goods over a mountain. Truly the complete opposite of all the other releases this week, and if there is actually drunken horses in it, that's a reason to see. Subtitled.
9 AUGUST
Intimacy (M): Selected. *subtitled*
Perfect Blue (MA): Selected- Syd. Animated thriller. Junko Iwano, Rica Matsumoto. Subtitled. Gritty manga flick, populated with ruthless businessmen, stalkers and a innocent pop princess who slides to sex-fiend slut. Try finding that in American animation !!!
The Pledge (R): Selected. Roadshow. Jack Nicholson, Robin Wright Penn, Benicio Dell Toro, Helen Mirren. Shortly before retirement wiery old cop Nicholson makes a promise to track down the bastard that killed an 8-year old. But can he keep his promise? Dark subject matter and a story that's not exactly spelled out for you.
Planet of the Apes
(M): National. Fox. Sci-fi. Mark Walhberg, Helena Botham Carter
16 AUGUST
Along Came a Spider (M): National. UIP. Thriller. Morgan Freeman, Monica Potter. Michael Wincott, Mika Boorem, Jay O Sanders. The Alex Cross sequel to Kiss The Girls, this time out to stop more wrong doings no doubt.
Driven (M): National. Roadshow. Action. Sylvester Stallone, Kip Pardue, Burt Reynolds, Gina Gerson, Till Schwigger. Looks to be one of the all time greats, if Days of Thunder was the best movie ever for you. Expect nothing more than driving, dumb dialogue and grunts from Stallone.
Sexy Beast (M): Selected. Townsville- October 11. Fox. Comedy. Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Amanda Redman. Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, Amanda Redman, Alvaro Monje, Juilan White. Gal Dove (Winstone) is enjoying life. He's fashioned his own lazy man's hacienda somewhere in the delicious heat of Spain, and there with his adoring and sexy wife Deedee (Redman), his loyal pool-boy Enrique (Monje) and his long time friends Aitch (Kendall) and Jackie (White), he's living out his days in lovely suntanned, caloric glee. Until an old face from the past arrives (Kingsley).
Silent Partner (M): Syd, Brisb. Drama. David Field, Syd Brisbane. An Australian dog racing comedy/ drama, made on a $16,000 budget and two actors- always going to be a hard sell. Quirky, but it might just be quite worth it- you never can tell.
The Tailor Of Panama (MA): National. Columbia. Thriller. Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis. Slow-moving and not exactly action filled, this features Brosnan as a spy (hmm he's never played that before. Then again, it may be stereotyping but it pays the bills), and Rush as the tailor that gets him into trouble.
23 AUGUST
Blow (M): National. Roadshow. Drama. Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Jori Molla, Franka Potente, Rachael Griffiths, Ray Liotta. Tells the story of how cocaine became one of America's biggest drugs and the suburban man who became an important link with the Columbian cartels. Essentially a frothy, little detail and short scene epic, expect more characterization than storyline.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (M): National. Buena Vista. Drama. Nicholas Cage, Christian Bale, Penolope Cruz, John Hurt. A boring war time epic love story about a guy and his instrument, appeals mainly to middle aged women.. its a movie that acting isn't very important. Fans of the book may want to approach carefully.
A Knights Tale (M): National. Columbia. Action. Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Paul Bethany, Christopher Cazenove. Teenage skewed film with new age music in an old age setting. It worked for Moulin Rouge. Could be a decent lancing story if Sewell can keep his anti-charisma in check.
Nurse Betty (M): Selected, Capitals. Townsville: Oct 18. UIP. Comedy. Renee Zellwegger, Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock, Greg Kinnear. Acclaimed but long delayed black comedy about an amnesia suffering soap addict who begins to think a TV show is real after witnessing a traumatic event. She then goes to LA, and eventually meets her dream doctor (who she thinks is real and not just an actor) Zellwegger gained a Golden Globe Best Actress nod for her lead role.
30 AUGUST
He Died With A Felafel In His Hand (M) Comedy. Roadshow. Noah Taylor, Sophie Lee, Emily Hamilton, Romane Bohringer. Based on John Birmingham's book, this has almost nothing in common with it. Taylor is the lead who goes through dozens of rentals all over Oz, with much happening but never a point.
Jurassic Park 3 (M): National. UIP. Sci-fi. Sam Neil, William H Macy, Tea Leoni. Mmmm dino-mite! More dino chomping action, this time its not directed by Spielberg, the plot is thrown away to fit in more action and an ending is forgotten or not needed. Ignore those feelings that its just more of the same, if you enjoyed the previous films at all, give it a go!
Startup.com (M): Syd/Melb.
Gil Scrine Films. Documentary by:
Chris
Hegedu about a internet company that made $1000 billion in its first day of trading, then
the staff wasted it all on Star Wars merchandise. Well maybe not,
but it crashed when the net crash hit. This is the story of
