CINEMA RELEASES JULY 2001

Enemy At The Gates : opens nationally July 26, 2001. (I have to go to ze lobby).

2 JULY

Doctor Dolittle 2 (PG): Melb, Brisb. Fox. Comedy. Eddie Murphy, Kyla Pratt, Jeffrey Jones, Norm McDonald (voice). More talking to the animals.  And fart jokes.  I ain't wasting any more time writing about this crap. You'll see it or you won't.  (5 July: Syd, Adel, Perth.)

5 JULY

Facing The Music (PG): (Syd, Can). August 2- Melb, Brisb. Doco. About Music department that faces being shutdown due to limited funding. If you are interested you'll be forced to see it at university, so don't seek it out too much.

Heartbreakers (M): National. Buena Vista. Comedy. Signorney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ray Liotta, Jason Lee, Gene Hackman.  Mother and daughter con job team make out well until they get caught and must pull their biggest con job yet.  Features Hewitt in her most prolific role to date.  Mmmm cleavage.

You Can Count On Me (M): Selected- Syd, Melb, Bris, Perth.  Adelaide: Aug. UIP. Comedy. Amy Ryan, Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, Matthew Broderick, Michael Countryman, Adam LeFerve, Halley Feiffer. Linney and Ruffalo are siblings orphaned at a young age, the story focusing on the way their lives changes.  A different movie- in pace, style (it was originally written for stage) and theme (its basically about nothing but relationships and direction).

12 JULY

Evolution (PG): National. Columbia. Comedy. Dan Akyroyd, Michael Bower, David Duchovny, Wayne Duvall, Orlando Jones, Wendy Braun, Julianne Moore. Earths five billion evolutionary process takes place in a month, to much comedic benefit no doubt. And don't mention Ghostbusters or Men in Black, no this movie sucks for enough reasons on its own thanks very much.

The Golden Bowl (M): Selected. Palace. Drama. Uma Thurman, Jeremy Northam, Kate Beckinsale, Nick Nolte, Anjelica Huston. Top period film action starring all sorts who are willing to "thee" and "thou" there way to an Oscar.

Laim (M): Selected. Dendy. Ian Hart, Claire Hackett, Anthony Borrows.  Comedy drama from Ireland by director Stephen Frears. Presumably not a Oasis story.  Now there's a movie for ya. "Oi! Muther*@! Did you spill my pint???!!!!"

Someone Like You (M): National. Fox. Comedy. Ashley Judd,  Greg Kinnear,  Hugh Jackman. Romance spreads between three TV workers, but when Judd comes up with a theory that all men are like animals and unfaithful, it all goes comically funny somehow (I don't understand how this is funny, but it says here that its a "comedy").

26 JULY

Bridget Jones Diary (M): National. UIP. Comedy. Renee Zellwigger, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Crispin Bonham-Carter, Honor Blackman.  Bridget is a always single girl who enjoys a bit of rumpy pumpy, cigs, booze and food. And why not? And she's got this diary, where she keeps track of all her endeavours. By all accounts just good fun.

Enemy At The Gates (MA): Selected. Roadshow. Adventure. Joesph Fiennes, Ed Harris, Bob Hoskins, Jude Law, Rachael Weisz. A historical thriller, it follows the Battle Of Stalingrad, specifically two snipers one Danilov (Fiennes) and Vassili (Law). They manage to get some hot war-time sex in there too (but not with each other, thankfully). That's another movie- Forbidden Wartime Homosexual Affair

Final Fantasy (M): National. Columbia. Animated. (Voices) Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Ming-na, Ving Rhames, Donald Sutherland. With a new story and characters (typical for the games on which the film is based), Final Fantasy will no doubt always come down to one man (or woman's) battle to save the world and win back their totty. Absolutely mind blowing graphics... the story absolutely blows.
